This month in science:
Carrie Partch selected as HHMI investigator; bear DNA studied to measure impact of conservation; Wolfgang Altmannshofer and Stefania Gori honored by ICBS, and more ...
Carrie Partch, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC Santa Cruz, is among 26 top scientists chosen by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to be HHMI investigators and receive the support needed to move their research in creative new directions and make groundbreaking discoveries.
National Geographic Explorer and photographer Joel Sartore recently visited UCSC's Coastal Science Campus in search of the elusive Santa Cruz long-toed salamander, one of many endangered species our researchers are working hard to save. The amphibian marked the milestone 16,000th species to be featured in the epic photo project that draws attention to—and support for—creatures around the world at risk of extinction.
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary will present its annual Ed Ricketts Memorial Award to Dan Costa, distinguished professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, and former director of UC Santa Cruz's Institute of Marine Sciences. In conjunction, Costa will deliver a free lecture at the sanctuary's Exploration Center in Santa Cruz.
SEPTEMBER 28 | 10 a.m.–2 p.m. | SEYMOUR MARINE DISCOVERY CENTER
The Seymour Center is offering an exclusive opportunity for UC Santa Cruz alumni to visit and explore the exhibits for free on Saturday, September 28. Bring the whole family and enjoy special activities for all ages.
