Farmers along the central California coast depend on extracting groundwater for their crops. But as in many places around the world, these farmers have been pumping the water out faster than nature can replenish it. Groundwater decline can cause various impacts, and major declines could even lead to a global food crisis. A new model to re-create nature’s method for refilling groundwater co-founded by UCSC hydrogeologist and professor Andrew Fisher points to a possible solution.
The Cal-Bridge program received $4 million in the 2023–24 California state budget to offer scholarships, mentorship, and professional development to STEM students from underserved backgrounds in fields like physics, astronomy, computer science, and math.
For nearly half a century, Ms. Blue–the 87-foot-long whale skeleton—has welcomed over a million visitors to Long Marine Laboratory and the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, but due to decades of exposure in harsh coastal conditions, the structures supporting Ms. Blue have deteriorated to an unsafe condition. Next month, the bones will be lowered to the ground for safe public viewing. A public celebration for Ms. Blue is scheduled for Sunday, November 5, 10am to 12 noon at the Seymour Center.
Marine mammals, including elephant seals, undertake some of the most extraordinary migrations on the planet to eat and avoid being eaten. At this virtual event, Roxanne Beltran will discuss how the Beltran lab group explores predator-prey interactions in the open ocean and their implications for the future of long-lived vertebrates.
GIVING DAY 2023
Giving Day, the 24-hour campus-wide fundraising event, is just days away on November 8. This year, the Science Division features over 20 projects focused on research, equity, and immersive student experiences. We invite you to explore the list of projects within the sciences by clicking below. Remember, gifts can only be made during the 24-hour window on November 8. Whatever the amount, whether $5 or $500, we thank you for your impactful contribution this Giving Day.
