This fall, the Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology (METX) at UC Santa Cruz will administer a Bachelor of Science program in microbiology. Students in the new major will study fundamental concepts in biology with a focus on microorganisms and will learn about the importance of microorganisms to life on Earth. “Students with a microbiology degree are in a good position to either work immediately in industry or to get additional levels of training with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees,” said Fitnat Yildiz, professor and chair of METX.
In addition to the new microbiology program, UC Santa Cruz will also begin offering graduate degrees in Materials Science and Engineering starting Fall 2023. The interdisciplinary program will serve students interested in developing new materials for next-generation technologies.
