Over the last 12 years with Paul Koch as dean, “the growth of the division has involved everything from its size and scope to impact, diversity, student accomplishments and prestige,” said Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori Kletzer.

Under Koch’s leadership, the division successfully launched new graduate and undergraduate degree programs and increased its emphasis on student success. The number of faculty in the division has grown substantially, and with a significant increase in the proportion of women on the faculty, the division is improving the diversity of its faculty to better represent the student population. The division has also seen steady growth in extramural research funding, reaching over $100 million in fiscal year 2023. Next month, Koch will pass the baton to the newly appointed and internationally recognized astronomer, Bryan Gaensler.

If you'd like to contribute to the growth of the Physical & Biological Sciences Division, please consider giving to the Dean’s Excellence or Dean's Endowment Funds. Contributions to these funds allow the division to achieve the next level of excellence and maximize your impact in the sciences at UC Santa Cruz.
