Established in 1994 by the eminent writers Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez, the Julio Cortázar Latin American Chair is one of the most prestigious recognitions for artists and intellectuals in Latin America. The activities of the chair include a free public lecture and a multi-day conference for specialists and students. Ramirez-Ruiz gave the public “Master Conference” on May 4 at the University of Guadalajara. His talk was titled, “On the galactic bestiary and the origin of the elements.”
Starting this fall, UC Santa Cruz students can major in a new global and community health program, with about 100 expected to opt in.
Co-directed by politics professor Matt Sparke and molecular biologist Grant Hartzog, the program intends to confront diseases like COVID-19 in context with the many social, political and economic factors swirling around such outbreaks.
The Summer Series program at UC's Lick Observatory draws concert fans and astronomy devotees to the summit of Mt. Hamilton for live music, evening astronomy lectures from world-renowned scientists, and the opportunity to view celestial objects through historic telescopes.
