This month in science: Mammoth DNA sequenced and analyzed, impact of a noisy ocean uncovered, Myriam Telus interviewed, Raja GuhaThakurta and Garth Illingworth elected Fellows of the American Astronomical Society, J. Xavier Prochaska & Sunil Simha honored by AAAS, job opportunities, and more...

This illustration represents a reconstruction of the steppe mammoths that preceded the woolly mammoth, based on genetic analysis of ancient mammoth DNA.

ECOLOGY & EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY, UCSC NEWSCENTER

An international team of scientists has sequenced DNA recovered from mammoth remains as old as 1.2 million years. The analyses show that the Columbian mammoth that inhabited North America during the last ice age was a hybrid between the woolly mammoth and a previously unknown genetic lineage of mammoth.
